Green Challenge

Paper or Plastic? Take the Canvas Challenge! 100 billion disposable shopping bags are consumed every year in the US. This is 200,000 bags per minute, or about 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store for the average family. A Lot Goes Into Making A Pair of Jeans E-mail
Wednesday, 25 February 2009 22:01

There's an amazing amount of resources and chemicals that go into manufacturing jeans.

Did you know that a single pair of (non-organic) jeans requires:

  • 1,500 gallons of water (that’s over 1892 liters)
  • 1, 5 pound of cotton (680 grams)
  • about 1 pound (450 grams) of oil to run the farm equipment and the pesticide sprayers
  • starch to size it (when dumped in waterways, bacteria eating up biodegradable starch depletes the oxygen needed by aquatic life
  • oil-derived paraffin to smooth and lubricate
  • caustic soda to give it a “worn” look, as well as silica or potassium permanganate, a highly  toxic chemical that contains metals
  • more water to dye
  • synthetic indigo dye made of coal or oil
  • chemical solvents to create liquid dye, as well as lead, mercury, cadmium, and selenium, which can all end up in waterways, killing aquatic life, burning seedlings or sterilizing soil in local land
